Beta Alpha Psi Epsilon Alpha Places Internationally for Deloitte Best Practices Competition

After taking first place at 2017 Northwest Regional Meeting, Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) Epsilon Alpha chapter has placed third internationally at the 2017 BAP Annual Meeting in the Community Outreach category for the Best Practices competition, sponsored by Deloitte LLP. Epsilon Alpha was represented by 2016-2017 Vice President of Competitions, Sydney Beard and 2016-2017 Competitions Director, Chloe Spahn, Epsilon Alpha enjoyed and appreciated BAP Alumni Advisory Board support through their presentation development process.

This competition focuses BAP chapters on crafting and completing activities to further their chapter goals while demonstrating BAP values. It also encourages chapters to offer solutions that can be replicated throughout the BAP international community. The Community Outreach category inspired students to provide outreach to underrepresented communities.

Roughly 60% of Portland State University’s (PSU) students are transfer students. Many of these students begin their higher education journey at Portland metro area community colleges and transfer in as they reach 300-level classes. The accounting industry in Portland has begun to see employment recruiting opportunities branch out to second-year college students at state and private universities. Epsilon Alpha and PSU partnered with Portland Community College (PCC) to identify high-performing students from PCC to offer this community resources to pursue such opportunities. PSU and PCC engaged through a series of activities including a letter-writing campaign, on-site PCC class presentations, and producing a video series available through Epsilon Alpha’s website.

PSU sent letters congratulating high-achieving PCC students and encouraging them to attend Epsilon Alpha’s highly successful fall recruiting support activities: Resume Critiques, Mock Interviews, and Meet the Firms. PSU transfer students visited their previous PCC campuses to share information regarding BAP with accounting classes. PSU faculty, staff, and Epsilon Alpha officers came together to produce a four-part video series sharing knowledge about PSU, Epsilon Alpha, and accounting industry opportunities.

PSU and Epsilon Alpha will continue to partner with PCC to expand their outreach efforts in the 2017-2018 academic year.

Attending this year’s BAP Annual Meeting were Sydney Beard, Jennifer Mick, and Chloe Spahn, along with BAP Faculty Advisors, Dr. Elizabeth Almer and Kelly Lutz.
